One advantage of an antibiotic periodontal treatment is that it can help you fight gum disease between your visits with us. It can be used as a stand-alone approach but is often used in combination with other treatments, including scaling and root planing or a gingivectomy. In many cases, our dentist may give perform a scaling and root planing prior to administering the antibiotic to ensure an effective treatment. The antibiotic itself is made up of tiny microspheres placed directly onto the affected areas of your gums. The antibiotic may contain amoxicillin, doxycycline, macrolides, metronidazole, minocycline or tetracycline, and it is known by several brand names. Common antibiotic products are called Actisite®, ARESTIN®, Atridox®, Elyzol and PerioChip®. Over time, the antibiotic is released, helping to remove bacteria in your gums.

As effective as this treatment can be, you will still need to follow all of the instructions from our dentist and maintain a strong home care routine.
