Pediatric Dental Sealants

It is no secret that kids love sweet drinks and treats that are heavy in carbohydrates, like potato chips. Those things can increase your child’s risk of cavities and, to be honest, kids are not always the best brushers, particularly when it comes to their back teeth. At Agave Dental Care, our dentists, Dr. Tony Kasallis and Dr. Stephen Sticht, and our team offer pediatric dental sealants in El Paso, Texas, to keep your child’s smile healthy. Questionable dietary choices and brushing habits aside, childhood can be a particularly cavity-prone period. Dental sealants are a preventive measure that can keep your child’s molars and premolars safe from tooth decay. The cusps on the chewing surfaces of these teeth can provide excellent places for plaque and food particles to accumulate, putting your child at a higher risk of dental problems.

Sealants are placed in a single office visit, usually when your child is between the ages of 6 and 12. This a layer of tooth-colored resin that is applied directly to the chewing surfaces of your child’s molars and premolars, effectively sealing out potentially harmful substances. In many cases, sealants can last up to ten years. However, depending on your child’s health, they may need to return for several treatments. The sealants only protect the chewing surfaces of the teeth, so your child will need to continue to brush their teeth twice a day and floss before going to bed.
